An American In Paris is one that is entertaining throughout but at times can doze too far into a dreamworld rather than staying true to realism.
Gene Kelly is great and so is the stunningly beautiful Lesie Caron. Though their chemistry is top notch I think sometimes the writing for the characters didn't fit their end result. The songs aren't as catchy as Singin In the Rain but I think the dancing and choreography are superior. The supporting cast is also a big bright spot. I did not see the twist of Lise and Henri being in a relationship. But they also never really sold me on either relationship. If they had written those relationships better than it would have made me get much more emotionally invested in each character.
Also, lets be honest there is no way in real life that Henri lets his love of his life just leave him knowing shes going to another man. He didn't even look mad, I was quite disappointed thats the way they ended it. I was also nearly put to sleep by the 15 minute dream like sequence right before the end. Nevertheless its a good film that isn't near the quality of Singin In the Rain but I'm sure many people will find joy in this musical.

Somebody actually gave this a "one" for a rating. A movie with incredible dancing, the music of Gershwin, the premier of Leslie Caron, and some of the most interesting graphic stuff for its time. I always preferred the dancing of Fred Astaire to that of Gene Kelley, but that's no indictment of him. I do admit he is a bit stiff as an actor, but this movie is a way of providing us with a visual presentation of Gershwin's amazing music. Like so many of the musicals of its time, it is short on plot. The characters are contrived and put there to sing and dance. Still, put that aside and enjoy the moment. Take a look at the musical choices. The Gershwins are the American masters. If all that was written was "Rhapsody in Blue" it would George immortal.
